This two-page insert was printed on a heavy stock with 7 colors (CMYK + a pantone blue, a pantone metallic blue, and a pantone metallic gold). It included several metallic duotone images, several screens and bleeds. The map at the lower left was created from scratch using a stock image of a painting used as a texture over a map of California, with the names of various wine regions typed in.
Knowing what will happen when different inks are used is necessary to make sure that the printed piece comes out exactly as intended. This often means communicating with and working with the press to find out the limitations of their equipment. No designer likes to get 20,000 printed pieces back that look nothing like they intended it too.
